Earlier this week, Mrs Trump expressed her opposition to the policy of the separating children of undocumented immigrants from their parents, appearing to blame both sides of the political debate.

The military-style jacket is reportedly sold by Zara and costs $39, according to published reports.

And, to make matters even more interesting, Melania's stylist Hervé Pierre told Women's Wear Daily he had never seen the jacket before, but declined to comment any further.

When asked about the jacket, Melania Trump's communications director, Stephanie Grisham, said, "It's a jacket".

"Now a lot of the clothes Melania wears sends the message 'I really don't care.' Also a lot of her facial expressions".

She removed it before she arrived in McAllen, Texas, to tour a detention center. The jacket belongs to the Zara's spring-summer 2016 season and is no longer for sale by the company, though a few of the jackets popped up online for resale at a moderate profit for sellers.

Thursday's visit was one of two that the president's wife made to the Texas facilities where some of the more than 2,300 migrant children are being housed after their families entered the USA illegally. But she has lots and lots of jackets.

A spokesperson for the First Lady denied that that message had any valence to what is now going on at the border. Noah made the same joke, but he followed it up with, "We could spend forever talking about how out of touch this makes Melania seem, but I don't really care".

Mrs. Trump had personally lobbied her husband in recent days to put an end to the family separations and had multiple private conversations with him on the topic, a White House official said.

Trump blamed media for criticising Melania's clothes of choice for the visit. As the first lady knows, fashion is not frivolous, It's not just a jacket, it's a disturbing, cold question posed to the world at the wrong time, and at the wrong place.

Many in the media pounced, with President of the Center for American Progress Neera Tanden arguing on CNN that the jacket may have represented a "moment of true candor" from the administration.
