JUST IN: Another Fuel Tanker crashes, explodes

Another four people were injured in the accident on Thursday evening, and 54 vehicles were burned.

The incident on Thursday occurred at about 17:30 local time (16:30 GMT) on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, one of the main motorways into the city. Fire, police and other authorities attended the scene amidst efforts to clear the road of the destroyed vehicles.

Information had it that the tanker was heading to Lagos along Alausa when the crash occurred. "The buses have been moved from obstruction while wounded passengers hospitalised". The governor assured that clearing of the highway of damaged vehicles to establish normal traffic flow would continue throughout the night until the objective is achieved.

Bolarinwa Dolarinwa Mufutau, a roadside mechanic, said he had just finished repairing a vehicle when he saw the tanker rolling back on the road.

Yesterday, afuel-laden tanker exploded along the same bridge after its brake was said to have failed. "I saw the motor boy (assistant) trying to put a wedge to stop the tanker from rolling back", he told AFP news agency.

"But the truck ran over the wedge backwards and immediately there was a bang". Petrol then began pouring from the tanker and a fire erupted.
