OnePlus delivers clarity with Software Maintenance Schedule

OnePlus outstrips most Android manufacturers when it comes to updating its phones, but the company hadn't enshrined the policy in writing. This means that its smartphone will get software updates for two years after launch, and security patches for three years, which is exactly what Google promises for its own devices.

While this gives people more reasons to buy OnePlus phones, it may also make existing owners to keep their phones for longer.

An announcement from OnePlus addresses the new OnePlus Software Maintenance Schedule, which covers the OnePlus 3 and 3T, OnePlus 5 and 5T, and OnePlus 6. Today, OnePlus announced a firm software maintenance schedule for its recent and upcoming smartphones. After November, both these devices will be getting an additional year of bi-monthly security patch updates via OTA. After the two years, the phones will receive an additional year of security updates that will arrive every two months.

As OnePlus also notes, this schedule applies to all OnePlus 3/3T, OnePlus 5/5T, and OnePlus 6 devices and is effective immediately. In early July, users that are in the Open Beta will receive an OTA update to go back to the current stable build of OxygenOS.

OnePlus were one of the chosen partners that saw inclusion in the Android P Developer Preview as the first time Google has widened the availability of new firmware beyond Pixel devices. This would include new features, Android versions as well as Android security patches and bug fixes.

Not a lot of smartphone OEMs bother with regular and timely software updates for their devices.

We expect other Android phone-makers to come out with a similar official circular on software upgrade cycle for its devices.
