Visceral Games' Star Wars is looking "pretty different" under EA Vancouver

Today at the Gamelab conference, Uncharted creator Amy Hennig, revealed to Eurogamer that she has parted ways with EA and is in the process of starting her own independent studio. Hennig was set to direct a Star Wars title for EA, but plans for that were scuppered with the closure of Visceral Games in October 2017.

"I'm not doing anything Star Wars". So yeah, I'm not doing anything Star Wars. That was the studio that Amy Hennig had joined after leaving Naughty Dog and there was a lot of pent up expectation for her work after the very popular Uncharted franchise she helped to create. Hennig said the new open-world approach was much different than what her team had been working on. I'm hoping to bring some people on board'. "It made it awkward because it was like, 'I never got the chance to announce that I'm not at EA so I need to just pull off that band-aid at some point" - but also had nothing to announce. It makes it sound like I just went home!

Hennig has instead started her own studio which she hopes to keep small. "So yeah, I'm not doing anything 'Star Wars.' And, who knows what the future may hold, but that project is on the shelf now".

"Hennig explained that despite the setbacks from the cancellation of the Star Wars project she was developing - which originally was planned as a single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure game - she explained that she "[gets] along with all those people [at EA]", but is now "working independently and staying independent". Knowing what we do about EA, we can safely assume that this broader experience will be something jam-packed to the hilt with micro-transactions, loot boxes, crowbarred-in multiplayer and all manner of useless cosmetic tat. Although the project was moved to go in a different direction, Hennig did say that she would still like to bring it back somehow.

Read between her carefully chosen words and it's not particularly hard to realize that EA was dead-set on making this game something it wasn't created to be. Amy is an incredible storyteller-a crafter and a creator. "We wish Amy all the best with what comes next, and we will all be watching with excitement".
