Cal Fire crews are setting fires to stop the fire.

"A county the size of Madison requires a very conjoined effort and yesterday was a prime example of multiple agencies working together for the benefit of its citizens", read a Facebook post from the Madison County Fire Department.

No historic sites or cultural landmarks are now threatened by the fire. The fire is 63 acres and 90 percent contained. With more people living in harm's way and the costs of fire suppression spiraling up, it's hard to ignore the fact that the vast majority of wildfires are human-caused.

Jason Curry of the Utah Division of Forest, Fire and State Lands said Monday that the fire has scorched about 10 square miles (28 square kilometers) near Strawberry Reservoir. "Trail closures will remain in place until fire management staff determines that it is safe to reopen the area for recreational use".

Many areas are under mandatory evacuation orders.

Several evacuated homes and ranches are situated in between the flames and the lake shore. Due to current weather conditions, fire behavior has diminished, although a threat remains. It started on July 1.

The massive blaze was choking skies with ash and smoke, prompting some officials to cancel Fourth of July fireworks shows and urge people to stay indoors to protect themselves from the unhealthy air. The fire is 25 percent contained.

The west end of the 72,500-acre fire spent Monday afternoon creeping down to the east shore of Lake Berryessa. "I've never seen a fire like that up close and it's an intense feeling".

The area's hard terrain is making it hard for crews to build containment lines to prevent the fire from spreading, The Sacramento Bee reported.

With every acre of golden grass that goes up in smoke, the County Fire proves how vulnerable California is to wildfires.

The County Fire erupted Sunday and at times has grown by 1,000 acres an hour and smoke and ash from miles away are raining down on the San Francisco Bay Area and California wine country.

It was named the Lake Christine Fire.

Crews continued to take aggressive action on Monday to set up perimeter control by creating a controlled burn while up against shifting winds.
