Croatia will face England in the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup after they defeated hosts Russian Federation 4-3 on penalties on Saturday evening.

The Croatian players were quick to take back the initiative in the game and by the middle of the first half they registered the ball possession at nearly 70% against Russia's slim 30%. Croatia are also just the second team to advance through two back-to-back World Cup knockout games after trailing.

The 90 minutes ended 1-1 before the referee signaled for the start of the extra time.

The match went into extra time and Croatian defender, Domagoj Vida, took them 2-1 up at 100 minutes with the added bonus of a salute from the nation's president, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović. The English team defeated Sweden 2-0.

Croatia goalkeeper Danijel Subasic made one save in the shootout, blocking Fedor Smolov's attempt.

The game was hardly the most exciting 120 minutes of football, although it was still better than France vs Denmark, and the teams couldn't be separated in "normal" time. Igor Akinfeev later blocked an attempt from Mateo Kovacic.

Ivan Rakitic had a chance to open the scoring for the Croats in the 15th minute with a free-kick on the edge of the box but his strike sailed over the crossbar.
