The local Electric Power Authority reported on Facebook that more than 13,000 customers were without service, including those who still do not have power after Hurricane Maria, which struck on its path through the Caribbean last September.

Power outages also were reported Monday on the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Croix, where officials ordered schools and government offices closed.

"Definitely, we were spared the worst", he said.

Beryl is likely to result in rain accumulations of 2 to 3 inches in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, and amounts in some areas could reach 5 inches. The island experienced sustained winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour (40 to 56 kph).

Puerto Rico's east coast was the most affected even as people in that region struggle to recover from Hurricane Maria.

Jaime Ruiz, a 54-year-old corrections officer who lives nearby, said Monday's storm was disrupting efforts to rebuild his home that was heavily damaged by Maria. The storm is, however, forecast to maintain this strength as it heads west over the next day, prompting tropical storm warnings for Dominica and Guadeloupe, where gusty winds and one to three inches of rain are possible.

"You worry, because you think about everything you've lost", he said.

After the storm passes through the Caribbean early this week, "there appears to be an opportunity for the remnants of Beryl to regenerate into a tropical cyclone when the system moves through the Bahamas and into the southwestern Atlantic", the National Hurricane Center said. It degenerated into a rainstorm Sunday shortly before it crossed over Dominica, another island was battered by Hurricane Maria, which killed dozens of people.

A third named storm that formed off the North Carolina coast early on Sunday was forecast to become a hurricane on Monday, the US National Hurricane Centre said.

"I don't know what we're going to do", she said.

Puerto Rico's governor had feared new power outages if Beryl passed near his island as a tropical storm as originally forecast.

No coastal watches or warnings are effect because of Chris.

This image obtained from the the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows Hurricane Beryl on July 7, 2018. "The system can still cause a lot of damage, regardless of whether it's a tropical storm or a hurricane".

Interests in the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic areencouraged to monitor the remnants of Beryl.
