The decision triggered protests by DMK workers, who gathered in large numbers outside Kauvery Hospital where Karunanidhi was undergoing treatment. The same year he parted with 50% of the seats to the Congress in the Assembly elections but the alliance was not fruitful and MGR won.

"Ezhundhu Vaa Thalaivaa" (Awake, our leader) and "Vaa, Vaa, Gopalapuram Polaam Vaa" (Come, Come, let's go to Gopalapuram) were among the slogans raised by the emotionally-charged crowd, referring to the locality where the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has a house.

Offering his heartfelt condolences to the departed leader, Patnaik described Karunanidhi as the tallest leader of Tamil Nadu, who played a key role in social change and reforms in his state.
