Fresh quake hits Lombok, fells buildings

A series of earthquakes shook that Southeast Asian nation and some regions of Lombok, an island approximately 4,700 square kilometers, entire towns and villages were reduced to rubble.

Volunteers and rescue personnel have erected more temporary shelters for the tens of thousands left homeless on the island.

Witnesses have reported buildings collapsing in the latest series of tremors to hit the island - following Sunday's fatal natural disaster in Lombok.

"We were stuck in the traffic while delivering aid, suddenly it felt like our auto was hit from behind, it was so strong", witness Sri Laksmi told AFP.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said on Saturday that 387 people died, jumping from the 321 it reported the previous day, as search and rescue teams continued to sift through the rubble and people already buried by relatives are accounted for. Nugroho said thousands of buildings had been damaged, according to the report. The earlier earthquakes also left cracks in walls and roofs, making the weakened buildings susceptible to collapse.

"We were stuck in traffic while delivering aid, suddenly it felt like our vehicle was hit from behind, it was so strong", witness Sri Laksmi told AFP.

People at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport were seen shouting and running down escalators, streaming out the exits and across the main hall.

Indonesian disaster relief authorities are trying to find food, potable water, and medical care for the 1,477 people severely injured and the 156,000 forced to evacuate their homes due to the disaster.

Relief efforts have yet to reach parts of the island four days after the quake hit, Indonesian authorities said, as hopes fade of finding further survivors among the wreckage.

FACEBOOK says it "regrets" an algorithm blunder that caused balloons and confetti to appear over posts about the deadly quake in Indonesia this month.

The quake felt very strong in Mataram, a city on Lombok's west coast, Susanto said. I visited villages yesterday that were completely collapsed.

The quake on August 9 is said to have sent residents of the island screaming on the streets as they ran out of their houses and shelters.

BNPB spokesman Sutopo Nugroho said there has been 355 aftershocks following Sunday's quake.

"We lack the infrastructure to perform operations because (they) need to be performed in a sterile place", Wibowo told AFP.

Many frightened villagers are staying under tents or tarpaulins dotted along roads or in parched rice fields.

'People are always saying they need water and tarps, ' he said, adding they were also looking for people with untreated injuries.

Aid reached numerous survivors, but there was still a lack of food, water and tents in areas hard to access.
