The Holy Fire - named for Holy Jim Canyon, where it began Monday - grew to almost 33 square miles (85 square kilometres) by Saturday morning.

Schools have been closed in Menifee, Perris and Lake Elsinore.

Forrest Clark made several outbursts during the hearing in Orange County, at times refusing to show his face, local media reported.

Clark's arraignment was delayed until Friday because he had refused to come out of his cell to appear in court Thursday. Some communities in Riverside County are under mandatory evacuation orders affecting about 7,500 residential structures, according to authorities.

The fire near Lake Elsinore is devouring brushy foothills, ridgetops and canyons.

After nearly a month of wildfires, the National Weather Service warned that satellite images showed "widespread smoke" drifting from the fires into western and central Canada before heading back south in the US Northern Plains.

The National Weather Service says smoke from the raging fires out West has impacted cities thousands of miles away - and the atmosphere above them.


In their Saturday morning update, California National Forest stated that Holy Fire had grown to a staggering 21,473 acres and was 29 percent contained.

The suspect charged with starting the Holy Fire in Southern California denies the charges against him, calling them "all a lie".

The Mendocino Complex Fire, now burning in northern California, is the largest in the state's history. Forrest Gordon Clark, 51, was arrested earlier this week on suspicion of felony arson and making a threat to terrorize in connection with the ignition of the Holy fire. "This shouldn't be called the Holy Jim Fire".

"Extreme fire behaviour was observed to the north and east portions of the fire".

Its largest blaze, the Ranch Fire, was only 53 percent contained compared to 87 percent for its twin River Fire.

Milligan said he did not know what he meant, adding that Clark sent emails to other people in which he talked about burning something.

The Mendocino Complex Fire in northern California, which is made up of two separate fires, has burned at least 302,086 acres since it began on 27 July.
