Erdogan to Trump: Shame on You, Shame on You

Turkey exported $1.04 billion (€0.91 billion) worth of steel and $60 billion worth of aluminum to the United States in 2017, according to the Hurriyet newspaper. "Aluminum will now be 20% and Steel 50%".

"Unless the United States starts respecting Turkey's sovereignty and proves that it understands the dangers our nation faces, our partnership could be in jeopardy", he wrote. He added: "Our relations with Turkey are not good at this time!".

In an op-ed published in New York Times, Erdogan warned Washington not to risk its relations with Ankara, saying otherwise it would look for "new friends and allies".

In a tweet, Trump announced the doubling of the tariffs in new punitive actions against Turkey, saying: "Our relations with Turkey are not good at this time!".

Turkey's President Tayyip Erdogan addresses his supporters in Bayburt, Turkey, on August 10, 2018. It's down 40 percent this year against the dollar. That sent the lira down even further. The weakened currency's value has helped increase inflation and anxious global investors.

The recent sell-off in the lira has been fuelled by investor concerns over Erdogan's grip on monetary policy under a new powerful executive presidency and the ongoing row with the United States.

Mr. Erdogan repeated his call for Turks to sell dollars and buy lira to shore up the currency, while telling business owners not to stock up on dollars.

On Saturday, Erdoğan said it was a pity the USA was choosing Brunson over its strategic North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally.

Also contributing are concerns around the fact that President Erdogan remains in control of the central bank - with the power to appoint bankers who set interest rates.

He also branded interest rates as a "tool of exploitation" which should be kept as low as possible.

"I call out to those in the United States".

"We will give our answer, by shifting to new markets, new partnerships and new alliances, to the one who waged an economic war against the entire world and also included our country", Erdogan said.

Trump's tweet Friday showed that in many cases, the political and economic factors overlap - Trump's decision to double sanctions on Turkey was made possible by a key trade law called Section 232 that gives the USA president very broad powers over tariffs in cases of national security.

Turkish Presidential Spokesman Ibrahim Kalin earlier wrote in the Daily Sabah newspaper that the U.S. runs the risk of losing Turkey as its ally.

Brunson and his wife Norine were imprisoned in October 2016, three months after that coup attempt in Turkey, for their alleged links to the movement of religious leader Fethullah Gulen and the Kurdistan Workers' Party.

Pastor Andrew Brunson, a protestant cleric living in Izmir, was placed under house arrest last week. The move came as Washington was in a diplomatic standoff with Ankara over Turkey's detention of an evangelical pastor from North Carolina. In his speech in the northeastern city of Bayburt, Erdogan added that he would decisively defend the country against economic attacks. These include places "from Iran, to Russian Federation, to China and some European countries", he said.
