"Money and job can't compensate lives but still compensation of Rs 5 lakh has been announced for the person who died". Locals join. Rescue operations on.

The almost 50-year-old bridge ran over the Majerhat railroad station but no train was running at the time, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

Train movement below the Majerhat Road Over Bridge (ROB) in the Sealdah-Budge Budge section was normal, Eastern Railway spokesman R N Mahapatra said. "We are holding emergency meeting tomorrow to chart future course", she said.

Another dead body has been found at the spot in south Kolkata where the Majerhat bridge collapsed on Tuesday, taking the death toll to two.

Mamata said the Kolkata Police will investigate the Majerhat bridge collapse.

"There could be a few trapped underneath the collapsed bridge".

The bridge in crowded Alipore area runs over the Majerhat Railway Station and connects the city centre with the heavily populated Behala, vast areas of the southwest suburbs and neighbouring South 24 Parganas district. We are receiving information from the rescue team on the ground. "Train services of Circular Railway from Dum Dum to Majerhat has also resumed this morning", he said.

Tram services have been completely suspended along the CGR Road-DH Road and Judges Court Road, he said. She said on Tuesday evening: "Four-five labourers used to stay in a temporary tin shed under the bridge". The injured are undergoing treatment at SSKM and CMRI hospitals in Kolkata. Additional lighting arrangements were made for the rescue team to work at night, said the officials.

The chief minister has said a committee headed by Chief Secretary Malay De will investigate the cause of the collapse.

The Trinamool Congress, however, dubbed the allegations baseless and said the state government had taken enough steps for fix of old and new bridges, which were in a dismal condition during the Left Front rule.

In March 2016, another bridge collapsed in the city, killing more than two dozen people.

"The state government and PWD department is exclusively responsible for the bridge collapse".

Trinamool Congress lawmaker Derek O'Brien tweeted, "Watching scenes of Majerhat bridge #Kolkata collapse".

Opposition parties blamed the ruling Trinamool Congress government and said its "callousness towards the fix of old bridges" was the main reason for the collapse. She held the state government responsible for the mishap alleging that the bridge was not maintained properly.
