Six-time US Open champion Serena Williams for the 10th time in a row reached the quarterfinals home of the Helmet.

But she responded impressively to win 6-0 4-6 6-3 and set up a quarter-final clash with eighth seed Karolina Pliskova, the last player to beat her at Flushing Meadows in the semi-finals two years ago.

Stephens was a comfortable 6-3 6-3 victor over Elise Mertens in the last 16 as the Belgian delivered an error-strewn display on Ashe.

"None of us are going to win 20-some slams like Serena", said John Isner, the No. 11 seed on the men's side, said before the Serena-Venus match. "I don't think I did a lot wrong".

She withdrew from the French Open before her last-16 match with Maria Sharapova because of injury, while she was beaten by Germany's Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon final in July.

Williams, who is seeking her first Grand Slam title since becoming a mother last September, has been in top form, facing only nine break points through four matches, with her only real blip a second-set stumble during the fourth round.

Even though it's hard, especially for me, we just do the best that we can.' Venus said she thought it was the best match you've ever played against her.

Kanepi was leading the second set 5-2 at a stage, but the 23 Grand Slam champion struggled in vain to force a tie break. She began her tournament with a good 6-4 7-6 win over Zarina Diyas before ousting Romania's Ana Bogdan 6-2 6-3 to reach the third round. "[Kanepi] has had a lot of big wins in her career". Kanepi was matching Williams' power with booming groundstrokes of her own.

The 36-year-old American former world number one is playing her seventh tournament since giving birth. On the way to another victory, Serena served 18 aces and made five breaks and made 47 winnersof with 22 unforced errors.

"I want [Olympia] to sleep in the bed with me every night", Williams said. "I'm thinking about playing tennis and enjoying this time with Olympia".

The quarterfinal matchup between Williams and Pliskova will be a rematch from the 2016 U.S. Open, which saw Pliskova beat the American in the semifinals. She's my best friend. she means the world to me.

Next up for Stephens, who at No. 3 is the highest seed left in the women's draw, is a repeat of last year's quarterfinal against Anastasija Sevastova. "For sure, there is always a chance for me". "I have watched her a great deal since then".

Williams, whose daughter Olympia turned one on Saturday, is aiming to win a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title in NY. "Well, I saw Steffi (Graf), too".

"I hope it's going to be on Ashe", said Sevastova.
