The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Florence is rapidly strengthening and that swells generated by the storm are affecting Bermuda and portions of the U.S. East Coast.

The center of Florence was forecast to sweep between Bermuda and the Bahamas on Tuesday and Wednesday before making its assault on the USA coast.

The National Hurricane Center said Florence is expected to slam into the coast around North and SC as a Category 3 or 4 hurricane on Thursday or Friday.

The NHC said the vast storm had maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour, reaching up to 125 miles from its centre, as it tracked west-northwestward across the western Atlantic.

Florence's max sustained winds have been clocked at 130 miles per hour with an further increase expected on Monday. And with little wind shear to pull the storm apart, Florence's hurricane wind field was expected to expand over the coming days, increasing its storm surge and inland wind threats, and raising the likelihood of life-threatening freshwater flooding.

North Carolina ordered residents to evacuate the state's Outer Banks barrier islands, and the governors of Virginia, North Carolina and SC declared states of emergency.

McMaster announced that he has submitted a request to President Trump for federal disaster declaration, which once approved would clear the way for federal funds and assistance for any damage caused by the storm.

"So when this is all said and done this is probably going to be the costliest storm in the history of the Carolinas because not only are you dealing with a major hurricane hit, but you're dealing with flooding of biblical proportions", Bastardi explains.

Numerous current Hurricane Florence model trends continue to target the southern North Carolina coast for Hurricane Florence landfall.

Florence is moving to the west-northwest at 13 miles per hour.

This storm is located approximately 1,170 miles east-southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina.

As a result, a Hurricane Watch and Tropical Storm Warning are in effect for the Cabo Verde islands of Santiago, Fogo and Brava.

Dare County officials ordered everyone to leave Hatteras Island on Monday.

"We've seen this many times in the past", said Dennis Feltgen, a meteorologist and spokesman for the National Hurricane Center. But the large storm's tropical storm-force winds could start to reach the coast of the Carolinas as early as Wednesday night, the National Hurricane Center said. The current forecast track suggests the hurricane will most likely approach North Carolina or SC on Thursday as it gathers speed. The NHC has also issued an advisory for the Eastern Pacific on Tropical Storm Paul, and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center has issued advisories for Hurricane Olivia, which is moving quickly westward toward Hawaii.

Preparations intensified up and down the densely populated coast.
