Wrist and reward: del Potro back amongst elite

Juan Martin del Potro, of Argentina, returns a shot to Novak Djokovic, of Serbia, during the men's final of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018, in NY.

Nonetheless, Djokovic, who thrives in such situations, showed his class yet again dismantling del Potro, who had been in fine form over the last two weeks in NY.

Naomi Osaka of Japan poses with the championship trophy at the Top of the Rock Observatory the day after winning the Women's Singles finals match against Serena Williams at the 2018 U.S. Open in the Manhattan borough of New York City, U.S., September 9, 2018.

Djokovic had dropped to 22nd in the world rankings earlier this year after needing surgery in January to fix a long-standing elbow injury, a problem which ruled him out of last year's US Open.

It emerged on Sunday night, when the new US Open champion revealed that a five-day hiking trip with wife Jelena had been the inspiration behind his back-to-back grand-slam titles. "When they shout "Ole, ole, ole, ole", that's what I hear", he said of the raucous chants for Del Potro.

Djokovic was thrilled to match Pete Sampras with a 14th Grand Slam title, but he said it's Federer and Nadal who have made him the player he is.

Djokovic glared at the crowd and tossed his hands up in disbelief after losing one 16-shot rally, then he steadied himself and fended off three game points that would have given del Potro a two-game lead in the set.

When another forehand error cost Del Potro his serve early in the second, all the momentum was with Djokovic.

Playing at a career high three in the world, Del Potro insists he is happy to be playing in the era of Djokovic, Federer and Nadal. "I believe he'll be here again with the champion's trophy".

"Pete Sampras is one of the biggest legends ever to play the game", Djokovic said after earning a third US Open crown with a 6-3, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 victory over Juan Martin del Potro.

It's del Potro's first major final since he won his only one in the 2009 U.S. Open by beating Roger Federer. Her mother Tamaki, meanwhile, shed tears with her daughter in the stands as they hugged each other following her victory, which gave her the honor of becoming the first Japanese to win a Grand Slam singles tennis title.

Welcome to Flushing Meadows, New York, for 2016's final Grand Slam - the US Open. It was a comeback for a guy who had four wrist operations in the interim. Actually today I am.

In the end, Djokovic thanked everyone for staying by his side when he was dealing with a hard injury period a year ago. "Novak has everything to make records in this sport", said the Argentine.

Amidst the searing heat and disturbing humidity of NY for the past two weeks, Djokovic battled through and rose above it all to shine under the Arthur Ashe Stadium lights for the third time.
